Boxers slug it out for gold; Hughes wins weight class at Ray McGibbon GlovesPosted By Standard StaffFCC is mentiond as the NIagara Fight Club Liam Hughes of the St. Catharines Amateur Boxing Club stopped Lucas Caride of the Motor City Boxing Club to win the gold medal at the Ray McGibbon Gloves in St. Catharines in the 41-kilogram Cadet B open final. Ryan Baulk of St. Catharines lost 14-10 to Bigtyme's Steve Rolls in the 75-kilogram senior open final. Rolls had defeated the reigning Canadian champion earlier this year. Tommy Johnston of St. Catharines stopped Motor City's Nathan Schoolcroft in his 81-kilogram senior novice quarter-final before getting stopped on points by Kingston's Juan Aguliar in the semifinals. Aguliar stopped Taylor Cote of the Niagara Falls' Niagara Fight Club in the final and was named the event's top boxer. Earlier, Cote stopped the Boxing Factory's Kelly Malanuk in the first round of their semifinal match. Austin Humphries of the St. Catharines Club lost his 41-kilogram Cadet A semifinal to Dallas Hasselden of Durham. Dylan Simon of the Napper's Boxing Club in Welland won the 81-kilogram junior final when opponent Garrett Szpniewski of Uptown retired in the first round. Simon stopped Belleville's Dave Rorabeck in the second round of their semifinal bout. The Niagara Fight Club's Brad Arbic defeated Lambton's Khalid Aboshawish 32-26 on points in the 75-kilogram senior novice final. Dylan Mask of Napper's stopped Chris Minicucci of the Niagara Fight Club in the third round of their 75-kilogram junior final match. Napper's' Cathy Edgecombe was stopped in the third round of her 70-kilogram senior women's final by Kingston's Cynthia White. Edgecombe advanced to the final with a 25-20 win on points over Lara Thacker of Newsgirls. The next event for the St. Catharines Amateur Boxing Club is a pair of shows April 25 and April 27 featuring boxers from New Brunswick. The April 25 card will be held at the Optimist Club in St. Catharines at 7 p.m. and the April 27 event will be at the Belvedere Club in Thorold at 2 p.m. PICTURES ARE COMMING
